ERCS Stages A Walk For Humanity

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) staged a walk for humanity event to commemorate the 150th Red Cross/ Red Crescent day on May 12, 2013. The walk that started at Menelik II Square and passed through Churchill Street before it ended at the Ethio-Cuba Friendship Park aka Dilachin Monument in Addis Ababa. Participants from the Red Cross families and supporters including ERCS management and staff members, Red Cross youth and volunteers, representatives of the international organizations and companies supporting the cause took part.
ERCS board member Dr. Tibebu Alemayehu in his welcoming and launching address noted that the event was organized in a bid to introduce and inculcate Red Cross movements based on humanitarian principles, rally the general public, volunteer more youth and reach out for vulnerable persons.
He further indicated that ERCS is a huge humanitarian organization with more than 3.2 million members and 75 thousand volunteers. However, due to the magnitude of natural and manmade disasters that are happening in the country ERCS needs to rally more volunteers and members around the Red Cross movement, Dr Tibebu said.
ERCS President Ato Daniel Tegenu on his part disclosed that National Society has been implementing reform activities geared towards pinpointing its strength and weakness, filling the gaps identified and thereby continues providing improved quality of services that could address most of vulnerable
In a similar development, Arsi Zonal Branch of ERCS celebrated the 150th day of the World Red Cross Red Crescent Day on June 2, 2013 in Asella. The celebration included a walk for humanity, running and a friendly foot ball match between Red Cross Team and Andinet Club. Athletes from various athletics clubs and projects in Oromiya Region took part in the running competition
