ERCS Joins National Measles Immunization Campaign

Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) is preparing to continue participating in the National Measles Immunization Campaign launched on 29th May, 2013. The National Society partakes in the immunization campaign in partnership with the American Red Cross. The campaign is going to be held in three selected vulnerable areas of Gambella, namely Anywaa and Nuer Zones; Assossa Zone of Benishangul Gumuz region; and Jijiga Zone of Somali region.
Currently, the campaign is taking place in Gambella and Benishangul Gumuz regions. It is also planned to continue the measles campaign integrated with Polio campaign in Somali Region at the end of June, 2013. The main objective of the campaign is to sustain reduction in measles morbidity and mortality by increasing community participation, acceptance and demand for measles immunization and improve routine coverage. ERCS through conducting the campaign has also prepared to increase community awareness particularly on the importance of immunization, to reach communities in remote areas with immunization messages. In order to successfully carry out the immunization campaign, around 1500 Red Cross youth volunteers selected from various kebeles have already taken four days training which was facilitated by ERCS and F.D.R.E. Ministry of Health. During this campaign alone, it is expected to reach 90,000 households.
